Junction Oval, Melbourne – Lighting an Icon
Junction Oval, also known as St Kilda Cricket Ground, has long been a key part of Melbourne’s sporting landscape. In 2018, the venue underwent a major redevelopment, transforming it into a world-class cricket facility and the new home of Cricket Victoria. The project was led by COX Architecture, Arup Engineering, Cockram Construction, and NUVO Electrical, with L&T engaged to provide essential lighting solutions that would enhance the space while preserving its heritage charm.
The Brief
The lighting needed to balance functionality with aesthetics, ensuring safe and effective illumination while minimizing glare and spill into nearby residential areas. Key areas requiring attention included the exterior wicket, public entry, car park, and the heritage-listed Blackie-Ironmonger Stand. The project also had strict time constraints, with a grand opening deadline that left no room for delays.

Our expertise in project facilitation was also critical, ensuring that the custom lighting solution could be designed, approved, and installed within a tight timeframe.
The Outcome
The result was a well-balanced lighting design that delivered safety and visibility while respecting the surrounding neighborhood. The thoughtful approach to light distribution earned positive feedback from residents, visitors, and Cricket Victoria staff. L&T’s lighting now enhances key areas, including the heritage stand, reception, café, gym, and memorabilia display, creating a welcoming and visually striking space that comes to life after dark.
What L&T Did
Collaborating with COX and Unios, we developed a sleek, minimalistic street light that could be both surface and pole-mounted, ensuring flexibility across different areas of the site. Our team managed the entire process, from design approvals to final installation, ensuring that the project stayed on track despite the challenging timeline.
